anyhu, end of the day, U REALLY CANT.u need to find yourself a program like cubase (SE, SX, Studio 4, Cubase 4 etc), cakewalk stuff & Protools.
i prefer Cubase by far as i find it easy to use (wel kinda) but best thing is to download demo's and try em out.
dont bout where u at but if u were here in RSA id be able to hep you with the best prices for software/equipment.
holla

Firewire or USB soundcards work a lot better......have a look at:
Tascam US122/US144
M-audio Fasttrack/ Fasttrack pro
Presonus Firebox
or IF you really want a mixer, go for firewire - Alesis FW series, M-audio, Behringer etc.....altho the ones with the better of the features might cost you a lil bit....

You do know that midi data entry and audio sample quality and/rendering is the exact same on most if not all audio software, correct?
its technically IMPOSSIBLE for you and me to tell what software was used to create a beat,UNLESS the beat has samples/stock sounds exclusive to a DAW that we know of,mixing effect/plugin that is exclusive to a certain DAW,etc.

no doubt if you talking about MIDI and audio SAMPLES are of similar quality.....but if you are RECORDING audio or midi, the software you are using does make a big diff...
for example, two that people nowadays always compare: Cubase and Protools. no doubt when RECORDING protools has amazing audio MIDI sequencing capabilities but sucks on the audio on the other hand cubase is the opposite.....
so yeah if you are working with samples, the software doesnt matter as much as the QUALITY OF THE SAMPLE, but if you are recording you own stuff the software matters as much as the mic you are using and the source you are recording....
