I use FL Studio and couple of other tools. So if it is that, my method has been to start with the Hi hat as the basis of my beat. Space the slots evenly, makin sure the bars are of an even number say 8 or 16. When you play the hat alone it should be able to loop back acording to the pre conceived beat in your head. Then fill in the kick and snare guided by the hat. Put the first beat in the first slot of the first bar and you will know where to put the first beat for the snare. Say you put it on the first slot of the third bar, that should sound like something. If by mistake you put it on the fourth slot of the second bar, you'll hear it come too soon. Not to say too much but I hope this helps you kick off.

That is some bullsh*t adviec right there. Dood could probably have better luck beat boxing than tryna make beats on fruity loops the way U explian it.
My man, if U are serious about makin' beats I will give U some secrects but PM me coz en let me know if U are interested.

i must have to disagree with you there Bcom. whot makes a producer is how prolific he is, not how stereotyped he can become with 'what works' for him. i usually don't lay hi hats 1st maself, but i've tried it on some certain beats and b'liv me...it works real kool if you know how to. the best way, in my humble opinion, to go about a beat is to have it all planned out first, and have the kind of artist you think would suit it in mind to guide you lay the tracks.....e.g.....charged abrassive beat like M.O.P's "ante up". if you have any samples in mind, get it ready before dropping the beat...that way...you know exactly what it is you want.
lay drums, bass and then do the rest...remember that the beat supports the vokals...the beat is not the vokals.

Yo u wanna Learn how to make beats ...u first gotta understand that it's more aesthetic than it is scientific ...it's first about the art...and as with anything connected with arts ...it requires a lot of intuition and finesse ...hence no set of rules can pidgoen hole a producer ...it's about u at the end of the day ...but first U need to get ur software .check out a couple of beats that come with it ...and see how u can manipulate it to start sounding like wut u will consider dope ...do this for a while ...and b4 u know it u already know all the tweaks and knobs ..and then u can start building ur own beats from scratch

Personally, for me, it depends on how I'm feeling. In most cases though, I'll start with a melody. Maybe a good 4 bars on the piano or guitar and then build around that. I'll find a particular instrument or sound and then expand off of it. Once I've got a solid foundation, I'll layer the drums over it. For me this is one of the most efficient ways to get started. However, if I got a beat or rythm in my head, or I'm bangin' on the pads and find something catchy, I'll go with it and then develop the melody around the drums.... Try out different approaches. Not all styles are gonna work for the next cat... Experiment a little.

there's no set hard rules for this, people have 'rituals' if u wanna call it that, others just settle nicely in a swivle chair and get going. basically it depends on the tools of your trade, do u use hardware, software or both? also do u sample , compose or do both?
my advice is light up a blunt, inhale that shit and just do what comes naturally. as long as the end product is hot who cares how u cooked it?
