if you have a midi keyboard that u wanna use, then reason is the best

acid is pretty much used for looping up samples, not really a "chop shop" kinda program

if ur broke as hell, dont really have crap, and want something easy, then fruity loops is for you. really easy to get into, chopping samples is a breeze. the midi implementation is boo boo, though. it is VERY frustrating. The latency for fruily loops is really high, too.

Pro tools is generall used as recording software. You CAN make beats on it, but why would you spend all of that money just to make beats? Its very powerful, easy to use, and you can expand with vst intruments and plugins forever. You can run fruity loops or reason inside of pro tools via ReWire, but thats a bit more complicated. If you plan on selling any of your music, learn this software. Almost everybody uses pro tools. It aint the best, it's just widely accepted.

Cubase is basically the same thing as pro tools, but geared more toward making the music as opposed to recording it.

hope this helps

basically i agree with almost evrything issues said except the part about fruity loops. having used all these softwares for more than 2 years i feel that fruity is a particularyly powerful tool for music PROGRAMMING especially when you want good stuff done. it is not frustrating but ENHANCING when you get to understand the gear.

read my post on fruity loops 6 (i'd post up the links soon) to get a complete view of what am talking about. the post is in nigerian hiphop forum.

automation in fruity is ya greatest tool, besides the ability to use all ya ogg, wav, mp3, midi samples and a lot of generators, vsts, and effects to get that pro touch into ya music. what's more, recording is kool too.

i use a combination of fruity xxl edition 6 and adobe audition 2 it's quite a kool combination.

explore the full uses of fruity as a rewire. it is complicated i know but it's worth learning. do you know that you can actually use different instruments, patterns and effects from the rewire slave (fruity) in to your host(audition, sonar, pro tools, reaktor, whatever)?

well the gear, likje i always say is only as good as the producers handling it. for those without the money to buy a pro tools gear, or even a midi key board (i have the midi, hoping to get tha gear soon lol) then fruity is ya best bet. learn your gear, and your possibilities are limitless.

I use Reason 3.0 for production. If Ive got samples that dont work on the NN19 I render them in Acid Pro 4 then stick 'em back in Reason. Recording is also done in Acid.
