Watup y`all im new...I just wanna kno wat u prefer between composing and sampling or whether u prefer both. Composing is nice esp if u can play instruments and sampling is tight.Me?I like both, cant front, its good 2 have the best of both worlds cos i think the best sound comes out from using the two.Wat do y`all think?

It's not so important are you composing or sampling... The main thing that you are able to create. You may use everything you hear, but if noone couldn't define what was it (in your theme) you may proud of you.

Yo sampling involves a lot of copywrite issues, but then agen if u wanna compose you have to know ur way round a keyboard for example. But if u can google a guy called Tony Stone,he uses both and hes tough!

well...

i do both...i've been sampling so long its hard for me to think outside of that

i'm learning to change it up, tho. i dont wanna be one-dimensional with my music, so I'm learning ways to attack my beats differently

always gotta evolve, change, and improve my sound. I never wanna do the same thing twice

peace

i originally started out composing but then i got introduced to sampliing and ive been sampling sincee, i believe that the best producers are those who can compose and sample at the same time.

To program ya own sounds u gon need a sound module (keyboards like triton etc) or even vst plugins. next u can layer the samples till u get the desired sound, or u can twick the settings to 'create' your own sound, or u can add different efx to the sound samples, distortions, pitching revs etc.

Its basically down to playing around. Like i have a snare thats made of about 6 different snares and claps, panned with individual fx to dem.

hope that helps, hit me on msn and i'll explain mo'

look at my profile pic... it's a EMU SP12.

i just bought it last weekend! i remember around the time when this thing was built (1985) as a small kid i dreamt of owning electronic music equipment... then a bit later when people started sampling doing hip hop and house beats i was beating the chairs and tables instead of owning a drum machine.

so... now about 20 yrs later i finally got this vintage machine. crazy in this age of software sampling but there is something magical about hardware samplers and in patricular this machine.

it's a classic hip hop production tool (just like its big brother the SP1200 with double the amount of sample memory) and what makes itr sound so fat and different is the low-res sampling - also it has very little memory so in order to make something good you need to be creative - one thing people invented was to sample at double speed (45 rpm) then pitching down inside the sampler, that is also what creates the trademark low-res SP12 sound.

still trying to figure this machine out. but no way u can never reproduce the exact feel with just reason, fruityloops, logic plus those royalty free sound/sample cd's.

personnaly I do both ...like someone said before, sampling is the backbone of hip hop and it helps to add some texture to your beats. Composing helps you to step your game up.
I've already sampled Fela's song "Egbe Mi O" . The song is on my website http://www.madeinunderground.vze.com , in tha jukebox page. The title is "Carry Me". Give an honest feedback on it .

the best hip hop producers start out sampling like i did.sampling is the basis of hip hop.but i think it's better to beat around the sample.ie:sample first and then play other stuff over it.u don't even need to know how to play a keyboard though it helps madly.if u got FL, acid pro or something similar u r good to go.but try composing once in a while coz it helps u stay original and creative in terms of melody and rythm
