The beat drones on
deafening thoughts
as they struggle to take hold
of the crowd, unblinking,
expectant, like a blank new page,
unforgiving, like the mark of an ink stain.
Heavy tongue fumbles
tripping words, mumbled,
spoken but unheard,
awaiting another turn
but opportunity never returns.
Draped in anxiety
like the velvet curtains on the stage side,
that signal the close of the grand finale,
and the echo of applause that will never be given
and that sinking feeling that i should have never risen
to take the mic that stands to tall
to take that bite i couldn't swallow.
I stand in the shadow of great performers,
and shrivel in the heat of stage lights,
blinded and burnt,
i cower back into the ambiguity
of notes and poems half read and unheard.
in between notebook pages and online forums,
nestled in the womb of a writers haven,
the performers beat drones on
like a distant heartbeat to the ears of an unborn.

@ Couzifer - sup man! Not really a comeback, just miss my AHH fam n thought i would drop by and update you on on of my latest.... - i can understand why this piece left you feeling like this, often we expect/assume poets to be gifted writers as well phenomenal performers, but not all are both...it can leave the audience, and poet quite disappointed...
I suppose i was just wondering;
can a poet still be considered a poet if they are only good at one of these things, or are they merely just writers or performers?
Does one require both skills to be called a poet?
Or is it a matter of practice, a matter of growth....???
@ Kizito & Unheard Voice - Thanks for the love, the pleasure was mine! :)

...from my point of view I think that writing and performing are two different art forms, poets who mostly do spoken word must possess both of the skills...they must write and they must perform (recite their poems)then there are those who just put it in writing and that's it...some go ahead and publish books, others sign up blog spots to avail their material. To me both are gifted poets (you don't have to possess both skills to be a gifted poet).
Thanks for bringing this up.

hmmm but as an poet, its undeniable that one of the best feelings ever is when people connect with your words, and perfomance is one of the best forms to feel the feedback, feel the connections, because today not that many people buy or read poetry, or bother to comment on blogs...
I dunno if its just me but i feel like performing spoken word is...something i'm yet to grow into, especially since i'm more of a writter, its a lil'hard to slip into the skin of a performer...
