Now'a'days, here in the U.S, and even Canada, more and more Rappers are putting out their own music w/ out the need for a label. Most of them create music, burn it on a CD-R, slap on some art work and sell these CD's for 5 to 10 a pop.

I think heads in African should do the same thing. There's also software where you can convert your music into mp3's and sell these downloads on your personal website.

nigerian artist are not exactly big enough to cover every entire aspect of the marketing strategies in their biz,cos you can't stay in on spot in say abuja and sell cd-r's for less than it is already going for currently without doin it on charity and ah......lets not go there alrigth i know it ain't easy surviving and hustlin in niger, without adding the stress of selling cd-r's on charity!!! :?:

I feel you. It aint easy on the side of the Americas either. Infact, in Canada, if you attempt to make money off of Hip Hop, w/ out a major label or exposure from the US, dont expect financial success, according rapper Checkmate.

However, many heads are not putting out their material for the money exclusively, but for the art. Peeps such as E40, Mack Mall and Too Short sold thier music independently out of their trunk Waayyyyy before California received media attention for the Hip Hop scene.

So when you say Nigers are not exactly big enough to cover ever aspect of marketing, your not saying anything different from the rappers in the US/Canada who are creating music w/ out any major label or media exposure. You just have to work w/ what you have.

it`s no lie that pulling weight in the industry in 9ja`s hard.i wish i could offer a solution.like other opinions, half bread is better than bons,so selling from hand to hand is better than not selling at all.i know my label mates(i`m under a new label in portharcourt that in my opinion intends to take a large chunk of the cake)specimen A,sold a sample of thier cd`s in port n lag for a fee and surprise..surprise got enviable returns.at that point with proper money management they would have surpassed the initial investment...so 1st hand i know it`s possible...but the big ? is initial capital.that`s why i opted for a record deal...and thanks to the almighty..i got one and our albums are dropping(both, specimen A and MayjahTrill)before the end of october...i must confess it`s not been an easy journey...but like i told myself..the first step is to put myself out there.with airplay,u should be able to tell a rough estimate of ur fanbase..then capitalise on the info u have.people have to know u`re out there.M.trill

sup man so u're specimen A related, man i must say i feel dem guys specimen A. like their no matter what song with the brandy beat. and the dis song aimed at some nigerian artist.was at rhythm fm abuja once for their talent show and wanted to flow on the dis track beat...ask mode nine why he didn't allow me. well whenever specimen A releases, try shipping some of ur stuff to ABJ. i'll definately pick a copy

yeah i guess KENNISMUSIC run things now, with their primetiem jamz stuff.man competition is the answer as we all know. but the problem is ...who will bell the cat? anyhow sha i'm pro naija hip hop. lets pray for forwardness.

Im still curious as to what it would take to open up the market to sell African Hip Hop here in the U.S., especially online. You would be suprised how much supply and demand that is.

I think that should be the next plan I should ask around about because I cant see an opportunity go by like that. And sitting around waiting for someone else do it aint my thing. So when and if things are popping, Imma be sure to holla at whoever in Nigeria and Ghana putting out hot material.
