A show dedicated exclusively to hip hop has been a long time coming on Kenyan TV. Perhaps the time for change has arrived curtesy of NTVs Friday segment of its music video programme, The Re-Up.

This segment, aptly named Hiphop Halisi/The Battle is hosted by Agano and Labalah, better known as Wakamba Wawili who are affliated to the larger Ukoo Flani crew. It feature exclusive and rare hip hop video, showcases local underground talent through guest appearances and freestyle battles.

As for the criticisms, some cats aint really feeling the raw energy of the duo, which they find is "too hood" and wont help in attracting viewership of the less hardcore lovers of hiphop. Should a smoother cat like Mwaf for example host it? Others say its being used as a platform for Ukoo Fulani Mau Mau to dominate and monopolize the industry since most of the local vids aired are their own. I just think its better than nothing. . .

Catch the show on Tv and online at http://www.ntv.co.ke on Fridays at 6PM local time, thats 3PM GMT, and lets hear what you think. Does this show keep it real?

Am impressed... it's a rare chance to see hip hop from the streets (or: non commercial / non compromising art in general) on national television, in any country.

I don't know how it is in Kenya but generally the 'less hardcore lovers' have more options to see their favorite artists and shows on tv.

By the way do people in Kenya watch East Africa TV (from Tanzania) a lot?

Now this some Hiphop Gospel right here...Thanks willpress fa' tha' info'...I was totally unaware of this, may be becoz of the timin' (Fri' 6-7pm?!- that's a wierd time to find me @ home watchin' TV, ) , but I will have to reschedule my Fridays to see wat this cats got in their crates...it gotta be RARE REAL Hiphop shit.

Abt Agano and Labalah be "too hood", I think they got to maintain it jus' like that...Hiphop is hood, Hiphop is the streets, Hiphop is reachin' out to everyone!

True that, an hour of hip hop on Tv is amazing by Kenyan standards. Its even more amazing that the show hasnt been toned down and is still RAW. When I saw the premier, I was like "Huh, they gon kill this show!" but it has survived for about 13 weeks now.

Channel 5 had good viewership when Bongo flava just hit. Dont know bout nowadays though.

Haha! I was actually hoping that somebody with recognise that... Yup, am still rocking to early 90s hip hop, when they still used to use them funny phrases like "izm' and "diggidy" :D lots of material that need top be reviewed man. I also got some Guru, Tribe Called Quest and Das EFX rockin off my system!! And I never quite get enough of Chino XL ...
