A good read at the Dailybeast blog: music critic Touré calls Soulja Boy on the carpet. Are Soulja Boy's comments ignorant or sarcastic? Is it because he's too young to remember the conscious lessons of the emcees that came before him? Or is he really only caring about the bling?

Touré: "Last week in Atlanta, I got to interview Soulja Boy Tell Em. I found out just how young he really is. He was one of about ten rappers I interviewed in one day for my BET show, The Black Carpet. I decided it'd be fun to give all the rappers part of the Proust questionnaire. I thought it'd be a way to get beyond image and into who they really are. Most of the guys gave good, thoughtful, intelligent, sensitive answers. I asked Juelz Santana, “How would you like to die?” He said, "Loved."

Then came Soulja Boy Tell Em. I asked him, “What historical figure do you most hate?” He was stumped. I said, "Others have said Hitler, bin Laden, the slave masters..." He said, "Oh wait! Hold up! Shout out to the slave masters! Without them we'd still be in Africa."

My jaw, at this point, was on the ground."We wouldn't be here," he continued, having no idea how far in it he'd stepped, "to get this ice and tattoos."

Wow. Never mind that diamonds come from Africa. Never mind that there were many generations of pain in between leaving Africa and getting diamonds. Never mind that the long-term cataclysmic effects of subtracting about tens of millions of young, strong people from Africa over the course of a couple of centuries is a large part of the reason why Africa now appears so distasteful to you. Never mind all that, Soulja Boy. You put country first."

Ignorant they all are. You know, given the chance to really express themselves on such a topic without fear of public opinion, almost all American celebrities of colour would give the same reply. Maybe Soulja Boy is just more confident to say it out-maybe he has made enough money that he doesn't really care about his next albums' sales...But believe me, all who have 'made it' in the west are proud they were born there-no matter how their forefathers got there. Here's a question - tell me 5 celebrities of colour who have openly declared that they wish their ancestors were left in Africa by slave masters...

Twenty6, true that. they happy they were born and raised in the states. that's their opinion. but at least the others do aknowledge the pain and suffering of their ancestors in slavery. the way Soulja Boy gave a shout out to the slavemasters, that is just disrespectful and like saying that slavery was a good thing happening to the Africans. To his ancestors slavery was nothing to be thankful for and slavemasters would def NOT get a shout out! that boy is just ignorant or stupid and disrespectful. Something good always comes out of bad things and yes, due to slavery he's living in the States (and to him, Africa is probably just some 3rd world country -cuz they tend to forget that Africa is a continent, not a country - with unintelligent people living in huts hunting lions (no disrespect but that is the opinion of many Americans I got to know)) and after 400 years he can now make big bucks talking about stupid stuff, and getting diamonds and tattoos (it's all about priorities huh).
so yeah, if it wasn't for slavery, he would probably be still living somewhere in Africa, but maybe then he woulda made more sense when he opened his mouth.

I totally agree with all ya opinions and jus want to add on too. Obviously Souljah Boy isn't in my top million pple whose opinion i vaguely even care abt,coz he'll always show an a** of himself without anyone tryingvto do so.The statement jus validates this coz jus shows his ignorance coz its like a spit in da face to martin luthers, malcolm x's and past hero's of african american history. All these heros fought for this boy to stand up and validate da atrocious agenda's of these evil unhumane practices. Its a fact alot of african americans are not in touch with their roots and dats truly thru no fault of their own. However da thing is if u know where u come from u can have an idea where ya going if u know ya history ya tradition u know where u should be and u value yaself as a person and respect yaself. When u do dat u can respect other pple around u and appreciate them. This dude and plenty others obviuosly lack this coz u wouldn't say such without thinking abt da repurcussions. If their so ashamed of their african roots take da "african" of african american name and jus be american, fact of da matter da rest of da world will still hate u coz your American!!

Well, wat can i say... The boy is not a Rapper anyway and he doesn't understand the principles of Hip Hop.
The true Hip Hoppers know. P.E, Dead Prez, Wu-Tang, Common, Immortal Technique, Afura, Killa Army, The Roots.....those are the cats that we can take an opinion from. This boy is still a slave, he just doesn't know.

Yeah, niggaz don slaved centuries ago & niggaz is stil slavin. Sellin our labour 4 unda priced time 8 hours a day, 5 or 6 days a week. Hes either gt a sharp sense of humor or he's incredibly ignorant.
