Hey good discussion, right now I won't venture on a definition of African hip hop but I would like to point out that artists all over the continent are representing the culture.

In fact people in Senegal have always been bragging that they have the biggest hip hop scene in the world after USA and France. While I doubt this is true (more likely, they are not aware of what's happening in Nigeria, South Africa, East Africa etc), there has been a vibrant hip hop community in west Africa for over 15 years.

And were you aware that a group from the Senegal got nominated aaaain The World Music Awards and I think the grammies(i'm not 100% sure now) same can't be said for the above countries that you listed.

Plus I'm a nigerian, without a hint of unpatriotism so to speak, i'll say the best (anglo-phone speaking countries) rappers are from south Africa and Maybe Kenya...

Nigeria still got a long way to go aaaaaaaand don't get me wrong not like there are no good emcees but they're twisted as to what makes-up a good emcee/rapper or Hiphop star.

It might interest you to note with greatest straight line, that the best hiphop star is a Pop star named NICE (9ce), how does he do it? he mixes deep yoruba (a Tribe In Nigeria) idioms with good rhythyms, the Street slangs as spoken by mostly school drop outs or uneducated urchins ,we called them area boys, with a poetic style even shakespear will envy and a nice melody.

the populace appreciate this guy's music but when it comes to hiphop man they tired of the half-baked hecklers acting up and cutting low-quality dubs.

I know there's Mode 9,OD,sasha and GINO after these ones the others are low-life popsters fronting hiphop...

I have always stressed the point of funding in the industry, and it is evident that the areas in which hiphop in Africa is booming are also economically advancing. Take for example, Suud Afrique et Nigerie...There are some hip hop artists who are receiving massive airplay and a lot of money from Studios but are not actually worth what they are being paid. What hurts more is the fact that there are thousands of others who are more deserving, but just because no one wants to invest in Hip hop music in their countries, they are left in the dark. Take for example Zambia, there are A LOT of MCs who are tight, but the world only knows of C.R.I.$.I.$ and that's probably because he does most of his work outside the country. Other companies have come to the aid of the industry, but efforts have gone astray since there is this General belief that Hip hop in Zambia, and Afrique as a whole, can not sell.

Hip Hop is Hip Hop anywhere and everywhere in the world but since Hip Hop is
more dominant in the States I for one prefer to include that “African” in Hip Hop cuz I’d always want to be identified as an African so there wont be a case of Mistaken Identity.
